Formalde Heidi – Portside Pirates
It’s been a while since I’ve been asked to write any sort of document so I apologize in advance for any poor spelling, grammar and story telling. I can certainly say that two years ago I did not picture myself being chosen for Fog City Roller’s skater of the month, how bad ass is that?! As a child I was, uh, blessed with a short and stout figure which put me behind in my sports career. I became an expert bench warmer while on my elementary basketball team. Roller derby finally allowed me to find a fun sport that a person of any height can learn to excel at.
Having such a cool hobby has allowed me to
a) Meet a TON of awesome people
b) Force myself to exercise on a regular basis and
c) Taught me that you can do anything you put your heart and mind to.
I had no previous skating experience which made the initial few months pretty tough, but with the help of the Learn to Skate program I was speeding around the track. I currently Jam on the Portside Pirates and absolutely love it! I also coach the Learn to Skate program with my teammate Twiggy Twerkins, which has reintroduced me to the excitement one feels learning the joy of skating.
|I hope everyone experiences the happiness you get from being involved in a sport at least once in their lives.I’m sure glad I did.|
Thanks for stopping by to read my post, and if you have no idea what the heck roller derby is and want to find out, or love roller derby and want to see a game, come on out on June 27 and watch our double header home game!
