That’s me in the middle with the hood.
I joined the Fog City Rollers the day the league started because I knew I wanted to help build something amazing for the city of Saint John. My original plan was to be a referee but as soon as I took my first hit I knew I was hooked on playing the game itself. I could go on and on about how much I love the game and the adrenalin rush it gives me. Everyone already knows it’s the coolest sport. That’s all obvious. If you don’t believe me I dare you to try it out for yourself.
What I wanted to tell you about is the other side of it. I was supposed to pick a photo of myself in my derby uniform. The problem was none of them represented what has become one of my favorite parts of this sport. What I didn’t know when I joined was how important my teammates would be to me. We hold each other accountable as individuals for the name we represent on the front of our jerseys. We sweat, laugh, win, lose, and yes we even occasionally party together. That has made me fall in love with every single one of them. We have each other’s backs on and off the track and if you mess with one of us, you’re messing with all of us. Any time I’m feeling lazy and think about skipping the gym or practice I remember that. The thought of letting these ladies down gets me up and going every time. So that’s why the picture that represents my roller derby experience is the picture of these powerhouses.
